Carl Frampton reveals the three trainers he considered before Jamie Moore
Next weekend Carl Frampton goes into his third fight with coach Jamie Moore but things could have been a lot different were it not for a phone call.
The Belfast featherweight has, numerous times, described how a suggestion from his father led him to Moore but has now revealed which other trainers he was considering before linking up with the Manchester man.
Following an acrimonious split from the McGuigans last Summer, Frampton had a preliminary shortlist of three trainers to take over from Shane McGuigan.
Writing in his weekly column for the Sunday Life, the 31-year-old described how I initially had three possibilities in my mind. I was going to touch base with Adam Booth, Ismael Salas – who did some work with David Haye – and also considered Pete Taylor.”
Adam Booth brought David Haye to world title success at cruiser and heavy before an Irish takeover in his gym, with the Londoner leading Andy Lee and Ryan Burnett to titles and recently taking Mick Conlan on board.
Ismael Salas, formerly the head coach with the Cuban national team, has cornered over 100 world title fights and is currently working with the nomadic Haye – who was a stablemate of Frampton under McGuigan.
Pete Taylor, based in Bray, brought his daughter Katie to Olympic gold in 2012 and now trains Frampton’s managerial stablemates Luke Keeler, Gary Cully, Davey Oliver Joyce, and Sean Turner.
Of course, Frampton [25(14)-1(0)] would link up with former Irish, British, Commonwealth, and European light middleweight champ Moore after an initial trial period went so swimmingly he declined to do any further searching.
He explained how “out of the blue, my dad rang me when I was on my way to do some training and suggested Jamie, who I had never considered.”
“I never got to speak to the other three because after a couple of days with Jamie I was happy that he was going to be the man for me, and that’s how it has turned out.”
“Linking up with him was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and my performances will continue to prove it.”
Frampton’s partnership continues next Saturday [August 18th] at Windsor Park where he will look to continue positioning himself for a world title shot when he takes on Aussie Luke Jackson [16(7)-0].
The Tiger’s Bay boxer has been training under Moore at the VIP Gym in Astley just outside of Manchester where he is joined by fellow Irish boxers Conrad Cummings and Steven Ward, along with Jack Catterall, Martin Murray, Rocky Fielding, Mark Leach, and Tommy Coyle.
