Carl Frampton reportedly set to split from Cyclone

Rumours continue to circulate regarding Carl Frampton’s promotional and managerial future, and it is being reported that there is a “relationship unravelled” between the Belfast featherweight and Cyclone.

The Barry McGuigan-headed outfit today “declined to comment” when asked by the BBC whether there was a rift in camp and if a split was imminent, increasing speculation that ‘The Jackal’ has left for pastures new.

BBC sources reveal that the relationship is close to ending.

Last month, the week before his scheduled fight with Andres Gutierrez, Frampton resigned from his directorship with Cyclone Promotions.

The subsequent fight week for the July 29th homecoming bout at the SSE Odyssey Arena would be disastrous. Frampton would miss weight for the WBC featherweight title eliminator, taking that status away from the fight, before the entire card was shelved hours later when Gutierrez suffered a freak injury.

The details of his resignation from the Cyclone board would emerge afterwards leading to widespread rumours. Neither Frampton nor Cyclone would comment on the situation which, if anything, only added to talk that the Tiger’s Bay man was set to end his career-long association with the outfit.

Rumours that Frampton was set to rejoin Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing were dismissed by the English promotional giant. Hearn himself would later say that he would “absolutely” like to re-sign Frampton, but stressed that he knew nothing of the situation.

During his time with Cyclone, Frampton won Celtic, Commonwealth and European titles before winning and twice defending the IBF super bantamweight title. Last year he would unify the WBA title in a grudge match with England’s Scott Quigg before a move up in weight to win WBA featherweight title against Leo Santa Cruz.

The exploits made Frampton the consensus 2016 Fighter of the Year.

The start of 2017 saw the Ulsterman lose his title in an immediate rematch with Santa Cruz in Las Vegas and he has not fought since.

Official clarification of the situation is awaited.
