Carl Frampton offers Scott Quigg rematch route

Carl Frampton will do an about turn on his Scott Quigg rematch stance if the Bury man can secure a World title this weekend.

‘The Jackal’ looked quite comfortable as he ended his grudge with the now Freddie Roach-trained fighter in February of 2016. In fact, so comprehensive was the win, most including Frampton himself felt there was no need for a repeat.

That never dampened the Matchroom puncher’s desire for a return and he has continually stated his intention to avenge his loss.

It seems there now may be some light at the end of the Frampton rematch tunnel as the former two-weight World champion, who faces Nonito Donaire in Belfast next month, has explicitly stated that if Quigg wins tomorrow night he will become a realistic option.

If Quigg manages to defeat champion Oscar Valdez to claim the WBO featherweight title in Carson, California, he will have something to tempt Frampton into a second instalment.

“It’s strange how this game happens. I’ve been saying anytime Quigg’s name is brought up that I don’t want anything to do with him unless he wins a world title. If he wins a world title then we can do a rematch. Of course,” Frampton explained to the Manchester Evening News.

The Jamie Moore-trained Frampton gives his old foe credit for taking a fight with the hard-hitting Valdez, but doesn’t give him anything outside of a puncher’s chance of winning and thus joining the either of Josh Warrington and Lee Selby as a possible Windsor Park opponent.

“Fair play to him, it’s a difficult fight but out of the world champions at the minute Valdez is someone who Quigg can beat because he’s hittable,” noted 31-year-old Frampton.

“Valdez is a ferocious puncher, he’s a very good fighter but he leaves himself open sometimes. Quigg can punch so that’s his chance there.”

“There’s a slight chance he can do something, it wouldn’t surprise me if he won but it is going to be difficult. Out of all the champions, he has a better chance against Valdez because of their styles but I’m expecting Valdez to win.”

Frampton is now promoted by Frank Warren, with the veteran English promoter having a notable association with the WBO, and there has been talk that the Belfast man’s bout with Donaire will be made a final eliminator for the organisation – putting the winner in line to face the winner of Valdez-Quigg.
