Captain KO – Brett McGinty wins opening World Championships bout

Team captain Brett McGinty led by example in Russia today with a brilliant knockout win in his opening bout at the World Youth Championships.

The strong welterweight took on Thailand’s Kiattisak Promchuay in the Round of 64 in St Petersburg and finished the fight inside the distance with some precision power punching.

The first round saw the Thai perhaps the more active fighter, but the heavier shots were being landed by the Ulsterman, with his lead left hook jolting Promchuay numerous times.

The Donegal-Derry puncher’s power began to tell in the second, and he hurt the South East Asian early, before forcing two standing counts as he methodically continued to land eye-catching big shots.

Following a doctor’s inspection, and perhaps knowing he needed a knockout, Promchuay came out swinging in the final round. This only played into McGinty’s hands however and soon a third standing count was administered. The Thai fighter would go down clutching his neck/shoulder area and the referee waved off the bout.

McGinty will now face Slovakian Andrej Csemez, who received a bye, in the Round of 32 on Sunday evening. A tough fight, the Central European won European Youth bronze earlier this year, a tournament where McGinty reached the quarter finals.
