Cancellation blow for Dazzler
15 July 2009 – By Mark Doyle
Darren Sutherlands hopes of a fight before the end of the month have been scuppered for a second time.
The Irish super-middleweight took his professional record to 4-0 with a fourth-round TKO of Gennadiy Raselev at the York Hall on June 30 and he had been scheduled to return to the ring in Sunderland ten days later. However, a minor cut to his right cheek put paid to that plan.
As a result, Sutherland was added to the undercard of Jamie Moores European light-middleweight title defence against Jimmy Colas, in Altrincham on July 24.
However, that card has now been cancelled after Moore was forced to withdraw because of a severe bout of the flu, much to the disappointment of promoter Frank Maloney.
“I regret this has happened as I am not in the habit of calling off shows, but Jamie has been told to stay at home for five days, he explained.
Even if he recovers he has lost crucial training days and with a world title fight so near we can’t take chances.”
The British bantamweight title fight between Gary Davies and Ian Napa scheduled for the Moore bill has now been switched to the undercard of Septembers English heavyweight title clash between champion John McDermott and challenger Tyson Fury.
However, it has not yet been revealed when Sutherland will next be in action.
