BT Sport apologise for Mick Conlan British flag gaffe

BT Sport have publicly apologised for a ‘flag error’ with regard to Michael Conlan’s big homecoming fight last night.

The station who broadcast the brilliant fight night posted the Union Jack beside the name of a fighter who has won medals for Ireland in world championships and Olympic Games ahead of his points win over Brazilian Adeilson Dos Santos.

The claiming of Irish talent by British media has always been a bug bearer for Irish sporting fans and Sky Sports felt Irish ire when they did something similar with world champion Katie Taylor.

It didn’t take long after the captions had appeared on the screen for social media to light up with complaints.

Noting their error BT released a statement acknowledging the error that was also broadcast on Boxnation and apologised for it.

“Due to an error, the incorrect flag was briefly shown alongside Michael Conlan on screen last night. We apologise for the mistake,” said BT in a statement.

Annoyance with the error aside fans were able to celebrate another Conlan win, another big night in Belfast and another solid undercard in the city.
