British title fight ordered for Anthony Cacace

Anthony Cacace [17(7)-1(0)] has moved into position for the British super featherweight title.

Following mandatory Ronnie Clark’s withdrawal from negotiations, ”The Apache’ has come into the fray and has been ordered to negotiate with reigning champ Sam Bowen [15(11)-0].

Cacace, who is on a final charge to fulfil his potential, fought for the first time since December 2017 in February gone on the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr and James DeGale’s pay-per-view clash.

Victory on that card against Alan Isaias Luques Castillo helped him secure a WBA top 15 world ranking and cemented a relationship between his manager Pat Magee and Al Haymon, who is looking to move into the UK market and link-up with Richard Poxon.

At the start of the month veteran manager Magee informed Irish-Boxing.com that he was looking to push his fighter up through the ranks. Indeed he pin-pointed #9-rated Aussie Bilel Dib – who he reveals was in the frame for the fight on the Eubank-DeGale card – as a preferred opponent.

Such a fight would also allow for such a match-up to be for the Commonwealth title along with, potentially, a WBA rankings belt – with Cacace now up as high as #13 with the organisation.

However, the 30-year-old has now been made mandatory for the British title and that may appeal also.

Bowen is the current champion and he must defend against Cacace next or vacate, that is indeed if the Belfast talent wants the fight.

If the fight is to go ahead the teams have until May 8th to reach an agreement or purse bids will take place.

27-year-old Bowen is managed by Carl Greaves who has previously stated that he views Cacace as a big fight but one for down the line.

The Ibstock talent impressively won the title versus Maxi Hughes last April and subsequently signed with promoter Frank Warren, first beating Mexican Horacio Cabral to claim the WBO Inter-continental ranknigs title before coming through Scot Jordan McCorry in a British title defence.

Cacace has challenged for the British title before, along with the Commonwealth belt, losing a tight fight with Martin J Ward in 2017.
