Chantelle Cameron believes she is “too big of a risk” for Katie Taylor

Chantelle Cameron [8(5)-0] would “love’ to fight Katie Taylor but doesn’t believe she will get a shot at a IBF, WBA and WBO world light champion.

The former top GB amateur feels a clash between the pair would be a ‘massive’ affair, particularly in Ireland and Britain.

Cameron holds the lightly-regarded IBO belt and believes a pro rematch – Taylor defeated Cameron in the 2011 EU semi-finals – would be big business but claims she provides too much of a risk for the trailblazer and thus won’t get the fight.

Indeed, so confident is the Northampton native that Team Taylor fear her she is exploring a move up to light welterweight.

Cameron told WBN that “I would love to fight Katie Taylor, we’re at the same weight and she’s got three belts, I have one so why not put them all up and have a massive fight for Britain and Ireland?”

“It would be great for women’s boxing in both countries,” added the English 27-year-old before admitting that she doesn’t think the fight will take place.

“I don’t think Katie will fight me, they know it is too big of a risk,” said Cameron.

‘Wham Bam Chan’ has undergone big changes recently, following Carl Frampton and Conrad Cummings from Barry [manager] and Shane [trainer] McGuigan to MTK Global and Jamie Moore.

Cameron returns to the ring to the York Hall on April 26th and plans to move up to the light welterweight division – where three of the current champions, Jessica McCaskill [WBC], Anahi Sanchez [WBA], and Victoria Bustos [IBF] are beaten Taylor foes alongside new WBO champ Christina Linardatou from Greece.

“I am looking at moving up to light welterweight and becoming a two-weight world champion,” stated Cameron, who seemingly views the IBO belt as a title on a par with the big four.

“That is the immediate plan for 2019 and I believe that MTK Global can deliver that for me and [coach] Jamie Moore and the team can get me in the correct shape to become a two-weight world champion.”

Ever since turning pro under McGuigan back in 2017, Cameron has been seen as a potential Taylor foe – although the Wicklow woman’s team have argued that the Brit has to build her profile and résumé further.

At present, the Bray native has bigger fish to fry. Taylor [13(6)-0] hopes to become undisputed lightweight champion in New York on June 1st, with negotiations with WBC queen Delfine Persoon at an advanced stage.

Indeed, beyond this, there are fights with further established names such as Amanda Serrano and Cecilia Braekhus that are on the agenda for Taylor.

Cameron remains a possible foe – especially with Taylor wanting to fight on into the 2020s – but, understandably, has some rebuilding to do, adjustments to make under Moore, as well as a messy break-up with the McGuigans to get through.
