Brandenburg Cup RESULTS – Three Medals for Ireland

The nine-man Irish Youth team will bring home three medals from the prestigious Brandenburg Cup in Germany.

Galway’s Adam Hession, Cork’s Owen McDonagh and Antrim’s John Paul Hale lost out in the light-fly, fly and bantam finals to Kazakhstan and England respectively.

The results saw Ireland finish fourth in the medals table at the 16-nation tournament in Frankfurt behind Kazakhstan, Russia, and England. The Kazakhs dominated, taking home seven golds.

Hession was edged on a 3-2 split decision in a result which could have gone either way. The Monivea BC man consistently, particularly in the second round, found the target against Makhmud Sabyrkhan but the Kazakh got the nod from.

McDonagh asked plenty of questions of England’s current European Youth champion Hope Price – who defeated Dean Clancy in the European final.

The Leeside Lough man backed the Buckinghamshire southpaw up on a number of occasions in rounds one and three but lost on a unanimous decision to the English star.

Hale and Kazakhstan’s Dibars Zhexen  were involved in a cagey encounter with both young men enjoying periods of dominance in the first two rounds. The computer suffered a technical TKO in the third and the last frame was scored manually by the judges with the Kazakh earning a 4-1 split and gold.

Irish team manager Gerry O’Mahony said the boys in green gave it everything.

“I thought Adam was unlucky. I though he did enough to win to tell the truth, great performance,” he said.

“I was just talking to [Hope] Price after final. Owen really put it up to him, he put the European champion under a lot of pressure. John is a great young lad, very tough.
”It was a tough week for our boys against quality opposition. The entire squad were very focused and worked very hard. The coaches had them very well prepared and focused.”

Phil Sutcliffe and Brian Friel were working Ireland’s corner in Germany.
