Boxing Union of Ireland reveal that Nick Quigley is NOT confirmed for Last Man Standing

The announcement of Nick Quigley for the Ireland’s Last Man Standing competition seems like it may have been slightly premature.

The Liverpool middleweight was announced yesterday for the March 3rd tournament at the National Stadium – where eight fighters will vie for their share of a €59,000 prize fund.

Question marks over the eligibility of Quigley [15(3)-3(2)] were raised – and then subsequently seemingly cleared as it was stated that the 29-year-old fighter had a grandfather who was born in Wexford but emigrated to Liverpool young.

It was claimed that birth records had been presented and passed by the Boxing Union of Ireland (BUI) – but the governing body have come out this morning to deny this.

The BUI stated today (February 8th) that they are still awaiting official documentation proving Quigley’s ancestral-based eligibility.

In addition to this, the body still requires proof of Quigley’s licencing situation – and that he has been licenced by a body affiliated to the European Boxing Union (EBU).

The English boxer most recently fought in Massachusetts, being stopped in four rounds by Spike O’Sullivan.

The Scouser has been previously licenced by the EBU-affiliated British Boxing Board of Control, however he had his licence revoked on medical advice in 2012.

He would return in 2015, licenced by the non-EBU-affiliated Malt Boxing Commission – which itself spawned the British and Irish Boxing Authority.

Quigley’s current licencing situation is unknown.

Six other fighters have been confirmed for the tournament – Alfredo Meli, Ger Healy, Chris Blaney, Bernard Roe, Sean McGlinchey, and Roy Sheahan – with one more entrant still to be announced.
