Boston a Home Away From Home-coming for Katie Taylor

It might not be the homecoming that everyone wants but there will be a distinctly Irish feel to Katie Taylor‘s next fight.

The WBA and IBF lightweight champion will defend her belts on Saturday October 20th at the TD Garden in Boston where she faces recent WBO featherweight champ Cindy Serrano.

One of three Irish fighters to feature on the bill, Boston favourite Niall Kennedy is set for a major clash while Belfast super featherweight James Tennyson sensationally challenges IBF champion Tevin Farmer.

Taylor, who was guest of honour at Fenway Park during a Boston Red Sox game this week, has received a great reception throughout her time in the city while on media duties and the Wicklow boxer is looking forward to this carrying into fight week.

The 32-year old Olympic gold medallist said that “it’s great to be here. I absolutely love this city — I love Boston — and this is going to feel like a homecoming fight for me because of all the Irish people here.”

“It’s a privilege to be on this platform with this great talent. October 20th is going to be a super night of boxing and I can’t wait.”

Taylor’s fight on the big DAZN/Sky Sports show will be her first against an established ‘name’, with the DiBella-promoted Serrano, older sister of multi-weight champ Amanda, already having something of a profile.

The Bray boxer’s management had lamented the lack of willing challengers recently and Taylor is delighted to have the opportunity.

The amateur legend noted how “I just want to thank Cindy for taking the fight. This is going to be an incredible fight.”

“There are the fights that I absolutely relish, it’s going to make for an exciting fight.”

36-year-old Serrano’s younger sister has been rather vocal towards Taylor but Cindy herself was respectful.

The veteran admitted that “Katie is a tremendous fighter — she’s a hard, hard worker — so I know it’s not going to be an easy fight.”

“It’s going to be a great fight. I’m a great fighter myself. I’ve been training hard. We’re going to prove that women can fight and we’re going to look good doing it!”
