BIRTHDAY BOY MAUGHAN HOPES FOR A DOUBLE CELEBRATION

TERRY MAUGHAN is hoping for a double celebration when he takes on Pauly Upton for the vacant Irish super-welterweight title this Saturday night (April 23).

The Nottingham favourite gets his second crack at the Emerald Isleā€™s crown at Northamptonā€™s historic The Deco, but heā€™ll have reason to cheer before the opening bell sounds as the fight falls on his birthday.

ā€œThis is like a world title shot to me and itā€™s come on the day I turn 31,ā€ he said.

ā€œIā€™ve already had one crack at it, but this time I intend on grabbing it with both hands. Iā€™ve been gifted a second opportunity to win it and it means everything to me, especially as itā€™s my birthday.

ā€œOf course itā€™s St Georgeā€™s Day as well, but being from an Irish family Iā€™m going to celebrate like itā€™s St Patrickā€™s Day because I missed the real day last month as I was in the gym training for this fight.ā€

By day Maughan works as a pharmacy dispenser, but come Saturday night heā€™ll be looking to hand out punishment rather than remedies.

ā€œMy jobā€™s weird in that all day I give drugs to people with ailments and then at night I get in a ring and punch people,ā€ he said.

ā€œIā€™m confident that I can get my punches off on Upton but Iā€™m not going to disrespect him and say Iā€™ll do this and that because, at the end of the day, heā€™s in boxing with the same ambitions Iā€™ve got.

ā€œI havenā€™t seen any footage of him, but I read in an interview that he was an Irish champion as an amateur so heā€™s got the pedigree and obviously heā€™s trained by Ricky Hatton, a legend in boxing, so he must be decent.

ā€œI know Iā€™ll be up against it, but I intend to go in there and do the business. Iā€™ve had a good camp and Iā€™m ready.ā€

Upton v Maughan tops a quality bill also featuring former amateur stars Zach Parker and Reuben Arrowsmith.

Tickets are priced at Ā£30, Ā£35 and Ā£40 and can be purchased from any fighter on the bill or by calling 07718 324102.
