Big Sexy loses to future heavyweight star

Sean Turner [12(8)-2(0)] wasn’t able to upset the odds for the second time running as he fell to his second career defeat on Saturday night.

‘Big Sexy’ upset the applecart back in December when joined David Haye as one of only two people to defeat Arnold Gjergjaj.

The 26-year-old heavyweight traveled to Switzerland put in a career-best performance and stopped ‘The Giant’ to boost both his standing and ranking.

Turner attempted to do something similar on a World Boxing Super Series undercard in Germany on Saturday night, but was unable to beat heavyweight prospect Filip Hrgovic [4(3)-0].

The Dubliner was the first man to bring the Croat the distance, but ultimately lost by unanimous decision with scorecards of 80-72 x2 and 79-73.

Hrgovic displayed some of the skills which have created such buzz around him to register the most impressive win of his early career.

Considering the ‘Big Sexy’ was the vaunted amateur and WSB veteran’s fourth pro opponent it may it may take some time for the Irish fighter to get some credit for the display.

The giant operator is tipped for titles and is expected to walk through a number of contenders en route to the top of the biggest division.

It also has to be noted ‘Big Sexy’ came in at late notice and while most will give him credit for lasting the eight rounds, there is some degree of frustration among Irish fans that a heavyweight who registered a much desire kick on win as recent as December was on the road at late notice against one of the division’s most fancied prospects.

It wasn’t all bad news for Irish heavies over as Nial Kennedy continued his momentum gathering run with victory in New York.
