“Better than ever” John Hutchinson confident ahead of WBC title fight

Out in the wilderness both boxing and location-wise for the longest time, John Hutchinson [12(4)-2(0)-2] now has the opportunity to make serious inroads in the sport.

Former Irish title challenger Hutchinson is ain action in Australia in the early hours of tomorrow morning in a major fight.

‘The Buncrana Banger’ tackles former Rugby League player Craig Parke in Sydney on a show topped by a huge fight for Dublin’s Darragh ‘Super’ Foley.

On the line for the nomadic Donegal middleweight is the vacant WBC Asia Continental middleweight title and a potential World ranking.

While the belt won’t grant him a Top 15 placing, it would get him on the ladder with a spot in the extended Top 40 rankings.

It’s a big turn around for Hutchinson who announced his retirement last July only to reverse the decision a few months later.

Since then the 31-year-old has claimed two wins in his new Sydney base and will be going for the hat-trick and a belt tomorrow at the Star Casino.

Hutchinson is in a good place and told Donegal local paper The Inish Times that “things are going brilliant for me over here.”

“I’m boxing better than ever and my confidence is flying.”

“I’ve been sparring with Jeff Horn and I really feel there’s nobody I can’t take on.”

Hutchinson is keen for career progression – and already has a bout lined up in Singapore next month.

While some may dismiss the green belt as a trinket, the well-travelled fighters see it as an important first step.

Hutchinson noted how “this fight on St Patrick’s Day is massive for me, because a win will bring me right up in the world rankings.”

One of three Irish fighters on the Foley v Wilcox undercard, Hutchins features alongside Galway light welter Gearoid Clancy [8(2)-5(0)] and Cork welterweight Danny Keating [1(1)-0].
