Belfast Brilliance – James McGivern claims Commonwealth Games bronze

James McGivern has guaranteed himself a bronze medal as the Irish boxing hot streak at the Commonwealth Games in Australia continues.

The Belfast lightweight was the team’s final fighter in quarter-final action and McGivern secured an eighth medal for Northern Ireland.

The St George’s stylist was faced with Mauritian veteran Jean John Colin and absolutely dominated the former African champion.

Following a stoppage in his first fight, McGivern won every round on every card here, forcing a count in the second round.

The 20-year-old will now box Indian Manish Kaushik in the semis following the Asian’s big win over European bronze medalist Callum French of England in the preceding bout,.

Earlier today Belfast flyweights Brendan Irvine and Carly McNaul along with Ballymena middleweight Steven Donnelly guaranteed bronze medals while Belfast light fly Kristina O’Hara upgraded to silver. Belfast lightweight Alanna Nihell, however, was eliminated at the quarter-final stage.

Tomorrow is a rest day but the action will resume on Friday with the semi-finals where McGivern and a further six Irish fighters – McNaul, Irvine, Donnelly, Kurt Walker, and the Walsh siblings Aidan and Michaela – will look to guarantee silver and book themselves a place in Saturday’s final.
