Belfast bound – Craig O’Brien confirms next fight date

Craig O’Brien [11(1)-1(1)] is set for another away day as he continues along the road toward big fights.

The Irish light middleweight champion will appear on the undercard of Cathy McAleer’s historic Commonwealth title fight with Ellen Simwaka set for the Europa Hotel and September 28.

After comfortably defeating Radoslav Mitev in Cork in July ‘The Iron’ had hoped a return Stateside was on the cards.

The Dubliner was planing to get the ball rolling with regard to building a fan base on Murphy’s Boxing shows akin to what his sparring partner Spike O’Sullivan has done.

The ticket selling Inner City fighter was hoping for two clashes on the East Coast before a big fight on the annual Murphys Boxing St Patrick’s weekend card.

“It will be get the name out there again in America, let the fans see me again and then maybe something big on Paddy’s weekend. There are decent names being mentioned. Murphys Boxing have one or two light middleweights so you can draw your own conclusions or do your own maths,” O’Brien said after his most recent win.

However, the skills advocate will have another tick over fight close to home first. While O’Brien is keen to return to big time action, the lack of a vibrant Dublin scene  means he has to be patient – and considering he had over a year out of the ring earlier in his career he will be happy he is being kept busy.

The fight also see’s O’Brien bring his fans to another part of Ireland. Since traveling to England to watch their man fight Anthony Fowler they have had away days in Mayo and Cork.

Now it’s Belfast for what at the very least will be an atmospheric show.
