Battler Larry Fryers ready to punch down doors on massive Matchroom card

Larry Fryers [11(4)-1(1)] claims he will unlock the kind of doors he has been knocking on for some time now with a typical all-action display on a massive American card next month.

The Monaghan light welterweight will box on a Matchroom show Eddie Hearn predicts will be a ‘belter’ at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan on Friday September 13th.

29-year-old Fryers will face off against New Yorker Wesley Ferrer [13(7)-1(0)-1] on the undercard of the Devin Haney v Zaur Abdullaev WBC lightweight title final eliminator in the famous Felt Forum.

It’s a massive platform for the American-based Irish fighter and one he plans to make the most of.

“A win here would unlock all the doors I have been banging on,” Fryers told Irish-Boxing.com.

“That is what I’ve got to keep in mind, this really is a make-or-break fight for me and I’m going to grab it with both hands.”

Fryers gets the chance on the back of the a sensational come from behind win against Bryan Abraham live on UFC Fight Pass last month. That win followed a kind of redemption victory in another entertaining fight at the Garden – and Fryers believes both performances played there part in ensuring he got a slot on the DAZN card.

“I’m not sure why they came for me, but I do think it had a lot to do with my last two performances and how exciting they were to watch.  Also, I bring a massive crowd with me no matter where I go so that could have played a part.”

Considering the two all action displays secured him a massive breakthrough chance, Fryers suggests it would be remiss of him to change things up even if he is against step up opposition next month.

“Without a doubt I’m going to perform once again. That’s the only way I know how to fight.  You can be sure of that I’m leaving everything in the ring in this fight. There will be no regrets and the only prediction I have is you’s are in for a hell of a fight.”

Ferrer is certainly a step up for the Monaghan fighter. His sole defeat came against via majority decision against the unbeaten Steven Ortiz and he has seven stoppages in 13 wins.

Fryers is aware a test awaits, but he its a test he requested as he wants a scalp so he can jump further up the ladder.

“I believe it is this guy will be the toughest opponent of my pro career to date, but what better way to show everyone what I can do than beat him in Maddison Square Garden. It’s all falling into place for me now and I have just got to go in and make sure I take care of business,” he adds before revealing he requested a good fight on the big card.

“It’s funny I got the call when I was up in Belfast at the Conlan fight and I was offered the chance to fight  Julien Sosa who was 13-0-1 and I agreed.

“That same night he ended up getting knocked out in the Barclays Center. My manager called me back up to tell me the bad news, but told me Eddie Hearn still wanted me on the show.  I told him I want the same caliber of opponent for this fight and thankfully they got me Ferrer.”
