Barnes: Myers took me to the wire but my killer blows proved too much

THAT killer instinct is what saw Paddy Barnes ‘edge’ and explosive fight with Hughie Myers in the National Stadium last night, claimed the Belfast fighter last night.

It was seventh heaven for the popular Holy Family fighter, as he reclaimed the Irish number one spot-Myers was reigning champion having won a tournament Barnes didn’t enter the year previous-and his seventh title flyweight Irish title after an entertaining three round dust up with the Ryston puncher.

It was bombs away and all action from off, but whilst Myers wasn’t intimidated by a fighter he labeled one of the best in the world pre bout and made The Holy Family man work, the two time Olympian landed the cleaner shots.

And it’s that cleaner work that Barnes, who reaped the reward of his body work to dominate the third round, believes won him a fight he was keen to label ‘close’.

“He took me right to the wire. I thought I just edged every round, but it was a close fight. I was just glad to come out the winner,” said Barnes.

“Every round was close, but my killer shots were just scoring more. I edged every round. I didn’t win it clearly it was a close fight.  I want to see how many I can win now. You have to win these fights to be called number one in your country and it is great to get a hard fight.”
