Away day no issue for Mark Morris – “I just need fights”

Mark Morris [3(1)-1(1)] just wants to fight.

The Andersonstown lightweight has averaged a fight a year since he turned over in 2013 and is keen now to get active.

The Belfast banger makes up one half of an intriguing all Irish clash on the Last Man Standing card early next month – and while his ambitious opponent, Victor Rabei [3(0)-0], may see the chance to get early career victory over non-journeyman opposition as the perfect opportunity to raise his profile and standing – Morris just wants to trade leather.

The Ray Ginley-trained puncher returned to the ring after a two-year hiatus last April, but the untimely passing of his mother a week shy of his win over Antonio Horvatic prompted the 29-year-old to take some time out of the game again.

He returns on March 3rd at the National Stadium and played down claims he has elected to fight Rabei in a bid to fast-track after the brakes were applied by ring breaks.

“I just need fights that will pay. I’ll go anywhere and fight in the away corner. I have been boxing pro for five years and this will be my fifth fight so I want to get busy. This is a job to me so I need to be fighting,” Morris told Irish-Boxing.com.

“I don’t know of him [Rabei]. I don’t really know many boxers to be honest, but I will be looking into him before the fight,”

It’s honest from ‘The Reaper’. It seems he isn’t too bothered about career plotting and matchmaking, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t coming to Dublin to win.

The always fit and always dangerous puncher has promised Rabei that a peak Morris will be standing across from him on the TG4-broadcast card.

“You can expect the usual from me. I will be going to win and I plan to be on the top of my game. Any person that gets into the ring has a chance, if they think I don’t, that’s up to them, but I’ll be ready for the fight on March 3rd.”

Morris has all Irish previous having fought James Fryers in a high profile MHD Promotions fight back in March of 2013. He was stopped by an exceptional Fryers that night but will bring that somewhat bigger fight experience into the ring with him next month. Morris didn’t state whether or not that will be an advantage but did reveal he was looking forward to the ‘buzz’ brought about by domestic derbies.

“All-Irish fights are always good for the Irish boxing supporters. They bring a buzz to the place so can’t wait for the adrenaline to kick in.”
