Antrim send strong team to Paris Multi-Nations

A six-man Antrim team packed with some of Belfast’s brightest talents flew out to Paris this morning for the Montana Belts Multi-Nations.

Antrim are a regular at the annual tournament, with boxers such as Conrad Cummings, Tyrone McKenna, JP Delaney, Dean Walsh, Sean Duffy, Mark O’Hara, and JD Meli having competed in recent years.

This year the team is captained by big-punching Holy Trinity middleweight Caoimhin Hynes who returns to the ring following his stunning KO win against England in February.

Reigning Irish Under-22 bantamweight champion James McGivern of St George’s enters at lightweight for what will be his first Open Senior competitive fight.

Holy Family’s Aidan Walsh, who won gold alongside McGivern at the 2015 Commonwealth Youths, will compete at welterweight.

Gerard ‘Lights Out’ Matthews is a late addition to the squad and will compete at 64kg, one class above lightweight where he reached the Irish Elite Senior semis in February, losing to eventual winner Pat Mongan.

Clonard’s Conor Quinn, who impressed for Ireland at the World Youths last year, has made the move up to bantamweight as he steps into the Senior ranks.

Finally Damien Sullivan comes in at super heavyweight. The big Emerald man reached the Irish Elite Senior semi finals in February, being edged out by eventual champion Martin Keenan.

Holy Trinity head coach Michael Hawkins will lead the team in France.

Boxing begins tomorrow.
