Another all-Irish fight in discussion for JB Promotions show

The inaugural JB Promotions show in Dublin on Saturday July 7th already features two all-Irish bouts and a third could be in the works.

Paddy McDonagh will defend his Irish light heavyweight title versus David Bailey on the bill while Karl Kelly faces Victor Rabei over eight rounds at light welterweight – with moves being made to have the BUI Celtic title on the line.

While a proposed fight between Chris Mullally and Vladimir Belujsky will not come to pass, another all-Irish fight is being discussed.

Bray middleweight Eddie Treacy (right of photo) will make his debut on the card and there is talk that the Irish Novice champion will face Belfast veteran Ger Healy [7(0)-5(2)-1].

Both are currently scheduled to feature on the maiden JB Promotions offering and could be brought together to face each other.

The prospect of this was raised by promoter Jay Byrne at the press conference during the week.

Introducing Treacy, Byrne explained how “it’s exciting when you have a guy going into the ring who doesn’t give a shit and just wants to fight.”

“He said to me ‘I’d fight anyone, anyone of that Last Man Standing’ and mentioned Ger Healy. I said it to Ger and that could be a fight that we make. Ger’s the same, Ger would fight anyone.”

“Ger is another one that wants to fight. Look at his record, he’s fought good names, he’s gone abroad, he’s fought away. I’ll be looking to get Ger in the ring in good fights.”

“Ger is coming down from Belfast, he doesn’t want to be coming down for nothing, he wants to be in exciting fights as well.”

“It’s a fight we will discuss with the lads. If they want the fight to happen, we’ll make it happen. It’s a North versus South fight, it’s a good fight.”

An excitable Treacy seemed keen on the bout and declared that I’ll fight anyone!”

“I want to be in exciting fights. I don’t want to take the normal route where you’re in camp for 12 weeks and fight some nobody.”

“Anyone can go 5-0 fighting journeymen.”

Healy, too, seemed intrigued at the prospect. The 34-year-old Lenadoon man provided debut opposition previously to the supremely talented Dee Walsh and is up for doing it again, especially if it can help quickly propel him to title fights.

‘Boom Boom’ outlined how “I want to get back to winning ways on July the 7th and then on to titles.”

“You know I’d fight anybody, so I would, anybody. Jay knows and I’m sure Eddie would be up for it.”

“I don’t know if the board [Boxing Union of Ireland] would pass it but I’d fight anybody. If it’s there, it’s there.”
