MEDAL ALERT: Amy Broadhurst guarantees bronze at European Under-22s

Amy Broadhurst guaranteed herself a bronze medal at the very least this afternoon at the European Under-22 Championships today in Vladikavkaz.

The Dundalk lightweight dominated her quarter-final in Russia to secure a spot on the podium and will now look to climb back to the top step which she populated at the championships last year.

Broadhurst beat Hungarian Kinga Mezovari on a wide unanimous decision in the Caucuses to coast into the semi-finals.

The Louth southpaw, the gold medal favourite here, had cruised into the quarters with a dominant win over Turk En Gizem while her Magyar foe had seen her Last 16 clash with Belarussian Ulyana Yesipenka stopped in the first due to an injury.

Mezovari had Irish previous, losing to Dervla Duffy at featherweight in the EU Championships in 2017 and had plenty of international experience but was no match for the Irish starlet

Broadhurst began in brutal fashion, countering Mezovari sharply and forcing a count inside the first minute. The Hungarian would become increasingly gun-shy and the trademark long left of Broadhurst would do damage whenever it landed on her opponent’s badly-reddened face.

Mezovari was looking to draw Broadhurst in and counter in the second but was too slow to effectively employ this tactic and allowed the World Championships quarter-finalist to lash in clean shots from the outside and outland her with a ratio of four or five to one.

Boxing smoothly, Broadhurst would pepper her opponent with straight shots throughout the third as well as heavy counter hooks whenever Mezovari ventured forward to round off the fight and guarantee the medal.

The Muirhevnamor 21-year-old’s international medal haul now stands at European Junior gold, European Youth gold, European Union Youth gold, European Youth silver, European Under-22 gold, and at least another bronze here.

Broadhurst will now look to upgrade to silver on Friday when she will face France’s Fatia Benmassahel, the 2017 European Youth champion.

The corresponding semi sees England’s Shona Whitwell take on strong Italian Rebecca Nicoli.

Two other Irish boxers fight for medals today with flyweight Niamh Earley and middleweight Aoife O’Rourke in action at 3:00pm and 4:30pm respectively (Irish time). Additionally, Galway boxers Adam Hession and Gabriel Dossen go for bronze tomorrow at flyweight and middleweight respectively.
