All’s well that ends Wells – Paddy Gallagher wanted tough comeback

Only ‘proper’ fights will do for Paddy Gallagher [15(9)-5(0)] at this stage of his career.

The Belfast welter’s ring return was confirmed this week and he will fight for the first time since his close WBO European rankings title fight to Freddy Kiwitt  in London back in February at the Ulster Hall on June 21.

‘The Pat Man’ would have been forgiven for taking a routine bounce back fight down a card topped by Tyrone McKenna and Darragh Foley.

However, the old school Lenadoon fighter will take on the ambitious Liam Wells – who made an early step-up last time out beating former Southern Area lightweight champion Jumanne Camero over eight rounds.

Gallagher would be favoured to win, but the former top kickboxer comes with power and confidence and should provide a test – and it seems the former BUI and BBBofC Celtic champ would have it no other way.

Gallagher still harbours major title dreams and wants fights that progress him toward that goal rather than keep-busy contests.

“I only want proper fights,” Gallagher told Irish-Boxing.com.

“I’m too far gone now to do four and six rounders with handy ones. I would only do that if it was to get me a win for another fight that was set. I’m going for the big one still so I want proper fights and I want them often.”

The more often than not bubbly character still seems to be haunted by his most recent defeat. Gallagher is still frustrated with how the Kiwitt fight went, but can’t seem to secure a rematch.

“The Kiwitt fight was a melt and a real shit one for me, but me and him may never happen as he doesn’t want to know. He got lucky and he’s playing the ‘moving on’ card.”

The entertaining 30-year-old admits to knowing little about his Essex opponent, but has been warned to expect a hard fight.

“This is a hard fight from what I know. He’s 24, ex world kickboxing champ, rough and tough. He is only a novice pro, but he accepted to fight me minutes after his fight last week.”

“I haven’t watched him fight yet but from them points I’d say he’s a hard one.”
