Aisling Browne – “This was the one I wanted”

Friday was a special night for Aisling Browne.

The Corpus Christi bantamweight claimed the National Senior (Intermediate) bantamweight title in Dublin in what was her second attempt.

The Limerick fighter overcame Shakira Coonghe from Douglas BC in an all-Munster affair, scoring with the cleaner shots from her southpaw stance and taking a unanimous decision (39:36 x2, 38:37) win over the Cork brawler.

Afterwards an elated Browne spoke to Irish-Boxing.com and explained how “I lost in the final last year, so this was the one I wanted this year.”

Coach Jeff Fitzgerald added that “last year it was very very close for her to lose, so she had a point to prove, especially here in Dublin. It’s a big stage, Aisling’s performed all year, but it’s a one-shot deal only so we had to make sure we left it all on the canvas.”.

Fitzgerald credited his hard-working fighter following the win, and described how “Aisling’s training has always been precise, you couldn’t get a more dedicated athlete, she’s first in last out, and she always does well. Aisling has always had a good drive, a very good work ethic.”

“We had a little bit of nerves during the week, coming up to the big stage, but Declan the senior coach in the club and myself have been doing a lot of work with her on skillsets, different sparring partners, and the whole club has been very supportive of her.”

“We saw Aisling’s opponent in the Celtic Box Cup so we knew what her style was and we knew Aisling’s skill-set would come out on top. Her experience got her through that.”
