After three cancellations – Martin Quinn may now be just one win from a title shot

Fight fans can expect to see a new more focused and determined Martin Quinn [2(1)-0] come October 6th warns the new-to-the-game fighter himself.

Despite having more cancelled fights than wins to his name, the lightweight prospect could be just one victory away from a title shot and, he claims, the glistening gold on the horizon has provided him with extra fire ahead of his ring return.

The Crumlin native fights for the third time on the increasingly aptly named ‘Rise Again’ card at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght next month and the fact he trades leather over six rounds makes him a legitimate option for the BUI Celtic title.

With Gary Cully now looking set to box for the lightweight belt on October 5th, the outspoken Quinn is keen to secure the light welterweight version of the title before the year is out.

“People will see a different type of fighter,” he explained to Irish-boxing.com when asked about his return.

“I’ve a different mindset now that’s there’s belts involved. I want one. I’m not in this as a hobby. I’m walking away with a belt.”

The BUI light welterweight Celtic title looks a viable option for a fighter that has seen his last three bouts fall through last minute, the most frustrating of which saw his opponent taken to hospital the night before they were scheduled to fight.

Victor Rabei is the current custodian having defeated Karl Kelly to take the belt on the ‘Celtic Clash 6’ card and Quinn, who watched that win from ringside and has previously shared verbals with the Moldovan-Dub, is keen to fight the new champ.

“I’m glad to see anyone win a belt,” he continued when asked if it was hard to watch considering his fight had fallen through and he felt he was more eligible than Kelly as a challenger,

“My time is coming, believe me,” promised ‘Mighty’ Quinn. “I’ll have one by the end of the year – fact.”

“It was a great scrap two boys gave it everything, respect to both. I had Victor winning and he did. Now that’s a fight that should happen. It’s a fight I want.”

While he is itching to move into title fights, Quinn admits it isn’t down to him – although the early move to six rounders is a good sign.

The 30-year-old noted how “that’s down to my coach and manager. I’m a team player I trust them but whatever is out in front of me I’ll be ready.”

Regardless of titles, and whether they do or do not come, Quinn is just excited to be back punching again on October 6th.

An entertainer both in and out of the ring, the Crumlin BC man has yet to trade leather in 2018 and it’s something he can’t wait to amend next month.

Quinn explained how “I should have had at least three fights since my last one, so it is frustrating. I had an injury, then a show cancelled, and then an opponent pull out.”

“Being honest, it’s disheartening at the time especially after all the time and work I put in, it’s hard, but I am back next month now that’s the main thing.”

I can’t wait to get back in. I really want to show how much I’ve improved. I few things in the pipeline in terms of moving forward and I can’t wait,” he added before admitting that he still has a lot of work to do following a frustrating few months.

“I hadn’t trained in five weeks after the [July 14th] fight was called off. I went on a break and a few drinks! Then I went away for two weeks and I haven’t fought since last year so there is lots of ring rust – but I’ll be ready for October 6. I will be ready for anyone definitely.”
