Impressive Adam Hession looking to continue turning heads

World Title challenger Jamie Conlan was in the commentary box for BBC at the Ulster Elite Senior Finals earlier this month and one fighter in particular caught his eye.

It wasn’t one of the champions, it wasn’t even one of the runners up, no, it was Adam Hession.

The Galway flyweight, on less than 24 hours’ notice stepped in to fight the experienced Ricky Nesbitt in an exhibition bout and greatly impressed Conlan.

Fast-forward six days and Hession was picking up the Irish Under-22 title to add to the Intermediate crown he claimed in November.

The compact Monivea teenager defeated Dubliner Mark Corcoran in the decider and is planning a big year.

Reflecting on the fight, Hession told Irish-Boxing.com that “it was good, I was always expecting another tough fight because he’s been up here for a long time.”

“It was sloppy because I wasn’t let work, he was holding inside. There’s nothing I could have done about that, I controlled the controllables and got the win.”

“I can only get sharper from here.”

The 18-year-old is developing into a very good little fighter and could eventually become a top flyweight.

Hession is certainly committed and the Leaving Certificate student noted how “I’m growing, still, I’m developing, I’ll grow into 52kg eventually lovely. I’m at a nice stage now but I’m going to work on maturing a bit more.”

“I’ve a great strength and conditioning coach, Lukasz Kirszenstein, he’s originally from Poland but he’s living in Limerick and training the Galway Senior Hurlers, he trained the Irish Senior Women’s Rugby team. I’ve also a dietician, Maeve Gacquin, she’s with the Galway Hurlers too.

“It’s top class, I’ve as close to the High Performance Unit as possible down in Galway.”

The win should see Hession represent Ireland at the European Under-22 Championships but the busy Westerner is also keen to compete in the Elite Senior Championships next month.

He outlined how “I was out in Brandenburg [Cup] but this will be my first major tournament and I’m delighted with that

“I’m not sure how it’s going to work with all the training and stuff but, if I have my say, I’ll be going into [the Elite Seniors]. I’d fight tomorrow if I could.”

“I’m doing the Leaving Cert – hopefully I’ll miss the Mocks! Ah no, I might do them up in Dublin.”
