A ‘bottle job’ who should be ‘honest with the Mexican people’ – Team Hogan react to Munguia fight announcement

Team Dennis Hogan have told ‘bottle job’ Jaime Munguia to stop lying to the Mexican people and admit he is not Canelo mark II.

DDP Sports, who promote the Kildare fighter are upset with the WBO light middleweight’s next choice of opponent and claim it proves he fears his most recent challenger.

Up and until last month they felt the huge for the weight star, who most argue was beyond fortunate to keep his title after his 12 rounds with Hogan in Mexico, would repeat with their charge for pride reasons at the very least.

They were not overly surprised, but still somewhat angered to see Patrick Allotey this week confirmed as the opponent for the champ’s sixth defense on Mexican  Independence Day.

Paul Keegan of DDP believes it’s a step back for the 22-year-old and while he understands the logic Fernando Beltran and co are operating off, Kegan believes it’s unfair.

“I think the fight his team have picked is a huge step backwards. You can understand that they want a fairly straight forward fight after Dennis beating him in his hometown,” Keegan told Irish-boxing.com.

“Up until a few weeks ago we thought they might follow through on their word and do the rematch. He said he wanted it , his promoter said he will do it , his co promoter wanted it and we wanted it, but in the end he didn’t follow through with his promise but that’s life.”

“He is on a big guarantee so he would have made the same for a rematch as he is for his next fight. It’s a straight up bottle job in my opinion,” he adds before stressing the powers that be in the WBO could have fought the good fight.

“The WBO are stuck because they were never going to order a rematch, but I know they believe Dennis won. I wish they had said enough is enough and ordered a rematch but they decided to stay quiet.”

Even the strongest supporters of Hogan may have become weary with the recent back and forth. Worn down by the cynical nature of the sport they may prompt Team Hogan to accept they were hard done by and a rematch was never going to happen.

However, Keegan isn’t content to sing of the ‘that’s boxing’ hymn sheet – and despite having other options for his charge will always cry foul.

The promoter is happy to wear his heart on his sleeve for a fighter who was a friend long before he became a business partner .

“My respect for him and his team right now is zero , they just want us to go away and not talk about the fight ever again which I won’t do,” he adds before calling for Munguia and co to main up whilst pushing the proud Mexican button.

“They should be honest with the Mexican boxing fans and say ‘listen, we got a gifted decision last time out’ instead of talking like he is the second coming of Canelo.”

“We are so lucky to have a fighter like Dennis representing DDP. There is no bullshit, no fake calls outs, no pretending to fans. He wants to fight the best. Dennis Hogan is a real fighter.”

Whilst they are not content with how things played out Munguia wise, DDP were not naive enough not to have a plan outside of a repeat for the Australian based world title challenger.

Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but there are rumours of a big fight with serious ramifications in terms of world titles in the pipeline.

“The great thing about our team now is we added Peter Kahn as our American adviser, so since we knew Munguia wasn’t going to give Dennis the rematch we started working on a new plan,” Keegan explains.

“Peter has been making sure American media know who the real world champion is. The Americans want to see Dennis again. We are a couple of weeks away from announcing our plan which will see Dennis fight in America in huge fights.”

“The Americans fell in love with him after what happened and it also helps he is Irish. With a huge Irish American base there we want to give them some huge nights and Dennis is the man to do that.”
