Geraghty registers out of the blue win live on BBC

Declan Geraghty made a successful and surprise return to the ring last night.

Irish fight fans got just over an hours warning the Dubliner would be in action as he attempted to make an out of the spotlight return to the ring.

Without forewarning anyone up and until the last minute ‘Prettyboy’ fought on the undercard of British bantamweight title fight between Glasgow pair Ukashir Farooq and Duane Winters.

Geraghty took on Naheem Chaudhry , who took  Armagh’s Sean Duffy the distance at the Falls Park in his previous fight, live on BBC Scotland.

The stylist had no issue impressing in front of the cameras and eased to an expected points win over a well traveled British fighter, who has never been stopped.

It’s was the Dubliner’s first fight since he suffered a fourth career defeat in May. The southpaw suffered heartbreaking all Irish reverse for the third time as he was stopped by Marco McCullough at the Ulster Hall.

The Belfast fighter’s reward looks to be another big fight when boxing returns to the iconic venue on October 11, but there were questions as to what was next for Geraghty.

Some suggested having lost to Jono Carroll, James Tennyson and then McCullough the two weight National amateur champion may retire.

That thought seemed to cross the 29-year-old’s mind in the immediate aftermath of the result, but it wasn’t long after that he was calling out Archie Sharp [16(8)-0] via Irish-boxing.com and stating his desire to fight on.

Fight on he did and Geraghty moved to within in one win of the 20 mark last night. He will remain hopeful of securing another breakthrough opportunity.

Indeed there could be one just around the corner as Geraghty revealed after the win that he would be back in the gym as early as Monday.
