No final fling for Grainne Walsh- welterweight has to settle for bronze

Grainne Walsh will have to settle for European Games bronze after defeat in Minsk today.

The Spartacus fighter couldn’t make it two from two in the afternoon session for Ireland as she failed  and didn’t follow her fellow Walsh, Michaela into the finals.

The Offally fighter was defeated by  Karolina Koszewska, losing via a 3-2 split decision.

The welterweight bronze medal winner beat more notable opponents en route to the semi final with sensational victories over Team GB’s Rosie Eccles and Finland’s European Champion Elina Gustafsson.

However, she couldn’t find a route passed massive southpaw Kozewska.

Walsh will be disappointed in the immediate aftermath of the result, but will in time take joy in the fact she secured another major medal and won bronze in one of the more difficult of International tournaments.

Four more of Team Ireland will be looking to progress to final day in the evening session.

Kellie Harrington, Regan Buckley, Kurt Walker and Michael Nevin are between the ropes looking to upgrade their guaranteed bronze to at least silver this evening.
