Gennady Golovkin faces off with Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas!

Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez Preview

The much anticipated Golovkin/Alvarez fight is finally here! In just a few short hours, these two champions will touch gloves at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena, and shortly thereafter the new World Middleweight Champion will be revealed.

Alvarez Set to Make His Middleweight Debut

Golovkin currently holds the IBF, WBC, and WBA belts, and Alvarez is making his debut, at 160 lb, as a former Light-Middleweight Champion. The Kazakh, who currently fights from Los Angeles, has said that he wants to win this match because it would be historic. He likened it to Leonard vs. Hagler, and said that there were many wonderful stories attached to the Middleweight division. He spoke fondly of the greats: Carlos Monzon, Sugar Ray Leonard, Bernard Hopkins and Marvin Hagler, and said that he was excited about writing new stories. He added that these were new times, and that he hoped to be added to the list of Middleweight Division Champions.

Golovkin Missed the Birth of His Baby

Gennady Golovkin is nothing if not committed: he was too busy preparing for his fight with Canelo Alvarez to attend the birth of his daughter. He missed the event last week, choosing instead to concentrate on his upcoming fight –it will no doubt be his toughest yet, and such was his determination to emerge the victor that he decided to let his wife Alina give birth on her own.

Golovkin asked not to be interviewed about his family, either, stating that his focus was on his business, and that his business was boxing. Abel Sanchez, the trainer for Golovkin, jumped in to explain that Golovkin was telephoned and told of his wife going into labour on Friday, but he chose not to leave the gym until 6 pm, and the baby made her arrival at 4 pm. He added that Golovkin’s logic was that the baby would arrive whether he was in attendance or not, and that he felt that his part in the process had already been handled.

His trainer stated that the fighter was in a much better mood of late, and was smiling more, but that he was unsure whether this was as a result of his daughter being born or whether it was finally getting the fight he wanted organised. Sanchez stated that Golovkin’s wife was an athletic woman, and remained in hospital for just one day, after which Golovkin joined them at home.

Golovkin’s Plans for Victory are in the Works

As the live sports betting and pre-match markets start warming up in anticipation of this big fight, Golovkin is already plotting his victory in the rematch with Canelo Alvarez, and believes the rematch is a mere formality.  He has stated that this fight is an important one for both he and Alvarez, but also boxing in general, going so far as to describe it as historic. He added that the does not think this fight will be the last one for he and Alvarez.

In a pleasant change from the insults and mockery that characterised the press conferences of Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Junior, Golovkin and Alvarez’s face to face meeting on Wednesday with members of the media was marked by its total lack of trash-talking. Everyone stayed respectful, and we’re looking forward to the fight!
