Walsh: We are no where near the podium yet
IRELAND’S Olympic hero’s remain no where near the medal podium according to a Billy Walsh unwilling to get carried away by the hype surrounding our punchers start to the London 2012 Games.
Excitement has been brewing since Irish fighters made a positive start to the Games.
John Joe Nevin, Darren O’Neill and Adam Nolan all progressed to the last 16 of the competition with excellent ExCel hosted displays over the opening weekend. Nevin won again to ensure he is just one win away from a medal but unfortunately for Irish captain O’Neill he bowed out yesterday.
Katie Taylor, Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan, all go byes, in the next round and join Nolan being one two wins shy of a medal. High Performance boss, Walsh, however knows two wins in an Olympic tournament are not easily registered and aired on the side of caution after the weekends three wins.
“It is ok,” Walsh said of Ireland’s positive Olympic beginning. “But there is a long way to go, its early doors, they are no where near medals yet. It is a good start and the place to be.
