Potential Brian Magee World title opponents
BRIAN MAGEE will now face a yet un-named opponent for the ‘regular’ WBA super-middleweight title after reigning champion Karoly Balzsay relinquished the strap due to injury.
The Hungarian has been struggling with a serious back problem since his victory over former champion Dimitri Sartison back in April and has been unable to fulfil his requirement to face Magee, his mandatory challenger.
Because the Irish fighter’s team won purse bids to promote the fight they can now choose any of the top WBA top 15 to face him for the crown.
Team Magee are open to offers and here is a list of the potential opponents in a world title fight which is most likely to take place in November.
Magee is obviously ranked number 1 and Andre Ward is super champion. List taken from the WBA’s latest world rankings.
2. ARTHUR ABRAHAM GERMANY (34-3-0)
Abraham is an Armenian-German professional residing in Berlin,Germany. He was an IBF Middleweight Champion from 2005 to 2009, making ten successful defences of his title. he went on to compete in the Super Six tournament and lost to Andre Dirrell, Carl Froch and Andre Ward. He challenges Robert Stieglitz for the WBO world title in August.
2 STANYSLAV KASHTANOV UKRAINE (29-1)
Kashtanov boasts a record of 29 fights and one defeat. That sole reverse came against Kalroy Balzay, the fighter Magee was initially meant to face for the WBA super middleweight title.
3 ANTHONY DIRRELL USA (24-0)
Not to be confused with Andre Dirrel, Anthony Dirrell is an undefeated 27 year old who boasts 21 knockouts in 24 fights.
5 SERVER YEMURLAYEV UKRAINE (22-0)
Yemurlayev is 22 year old undefeated puncher with just eight knockouts on what could deemed a padded out record.
6 DIMITRI SARTISON KAZ (27-1)
Dimitri Sartison fights out of Germany but was born in Rudniy, Kazakhstan he is a former WBA super middleweight champion. He won the vacant WBA super middleweight title against Stjepan Božić from Croatia on 21 November 2009, in Kiel, Germany, but lost it Balzay earlier this year.
7 ADONIS STEVENSON (18-1)
Stevenson is a Hati born Canadian born fighter know as ”Superman”.
He is a former Canadian amateur champ and Commonwealth silver medallist. He is currently the WBC Continental Americas super middleweight title holder, and he captured the Canadian super-middleweight title in a year.
8 EDWIN RODRIGUEZ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC (21-0)
Irish fans will remember Rodriguez as the fighter who provided chief support to Matthew Macklin, as he attempted to dethrone middleweight ring king Sergio Martinez on St Patricks Day in New York. He is another undefeated fighter but has yet to face one of the big names.
9. KELLY PAVLIK USA
The Ghost is probably the most known of the top 15. He was a The Ring, WBC & WBO Middleweight Champion from when he beat Jermain Taylor on September 29, 2007 until he lost his titles to Sergio Martínez on April 17, 2010. He has had his issues out of the ring but is back fighting and would prove a massive draw.
10 DYAH DAVID USA
Sounds welsh but David is American, with a record of 21 wins and three loses and without any standout names on his CV doesn’t look a likely opponent.
11. GEORGE GROVES U.K. 15-0
British star Groves is a name to get Irish fight fans excited. The British and Commonwealth champion, who holds a win over the man who denied Darren Sutherland an Olympic final spot James Degale, is unbeaten and said to be on the verge of a world title fight.
12. NIKOLA SJEKLOCA MONTENEGRO
Sjekloca is unbeaten in 25 contests and is a World Championship Gold medallist. He also has Irish previous having lost to Andy Lee in the 2004 European amateur championships.
13 THOMAS OOSTHUIZEN SOUTH AFRICA (21-20)
Oosthuizen is IBO Super Middleweight champion and the Ring Magazine rank him fourth in the Division and boasts a record of 20 wins in 21 pro fights.
14 GUSMYR PERDOMO Venezuela (18-3)
Perdomo has three loses in 18 fights but two of those defeats came via the gloves of fromer world champions Mikkel Kessler and Dimitri Sartison.
15 BADOU JACK
The Ripper is a former Olympian. The Swedish fighter, whose father hails from Gambia has only had 11 fights all of which he won.
