Masterclass from Nevin sets up Ireland v GB Bantamweight final
By Jonny Stapleton
JOHN Joe Nevin gave the World champion a lesson in boxing in the ExCel today producing a master class performance to secure a place in the Olympic bantamweight final.
The Mullingar man was nothing short of sensational and out Cuban-ed the Cuban and will fight for Gold tomorrow night after very comfortable 19-14 victory.
Magnificent, just doesn’t do it justice- Nevin made the current number 1 Lazaro Alvarez Estrada look ordinary and was so assured of victory he could even afford to break out the Mullingar shuffle in the latter stages.
The victory sets up a mouth watering final with home favourite Luke Campbell- (8:45 Saturday) and victory over the GB star will surely mean the bantamweight will replace Joe Dolan as Mullingars favourite son.
Nevin wasn’t long about returning a smile to Irish fans faces and his emphatic display proved perfect tonic for the gloom surrounding Paddy Barnes unfortunate exit.
His illusive style and lunging straight right hands caused the Cuban trouble from the off and he opened up a 5-3 lead by the end of the first.
He increased the advantage to three points after the second and danced his way into the final winning the last round at a canter.
Nevin becomes the second member of Team Ireland after Katie Taylor to make an Olympic Final and Michael Conlan could make that three as he fights Cuban opossition at 8:45 tonight.
