Ireland second in the Medal table
By IABA Press Officer Bernard O’Neill
Katie Taylor’s win has lifted Ireland into joint second spot in the medals tables at London 2012.
Thursday’s Katie Taylor versus Sofya Ochigava Olympic lightweight final was an all female affair as the third person in the ring, referee Almonte Martinez, was also a woman.
Taylor – and even the weather has dramatically improved here since she won – claimed an historic gold against the Russian southpaw yesterday and also scooped the Female boxer of the 2012 Games award.
This is the first time that this award has been presented as female boxing made its debut at the 2012 Games. The award citation specifically mentioned the Taylor versus Natasha Jonas bout as one of the contests of the tournament, male or female.
Meanwhile, Taylor’s win has lifted Ireland into joint second spot in the medals table with hosts Great Britain. This will change over the weekend when the men’s final places are decided.
However, for now, Ireland is in a top two position.
