Magee to challenge for WBA World title on September 22

By Jonny Stapleton

BRIAN Magee has finally secured a date for his WBA World title fight and could realise his dream on September 22.

The World Boxing Association approved and announced the new date for the mandatory fight between the regular champion Karoly Balzay and the Interim strap holder Magee.

The Irish Boxer of the Year was initially meant to trade leather with the Hungarian on July 7, but the champion failed to sign the contract after Magee’s manager Pat Magee won the purse bids to promote the fight.

Balzay cited the lack of a TV date as the reason he failed to agree to the July 7 clash, but rumours are rife he is suffering from a back injury.

Either way the  WBA championships committee approved the request of
the new date due to the unforeseen circumstances and Magee could
become Ireland’s latest world champion on September 22.
