Ireland beat Germany in Russia

Irish flyweight Gary Cully had his hand raised in victory over two opponents on the same day at the Veles Cup Round Robin in the Oblast region of Russia.

Cully was adjudged to have been beaten 12-11 by Russia’s Kirill Kuznetsov in yesterday’s 8-4 reversal to the host nation.

However, Ireland lodged a protest following that “defeat” and the result was overturned and Cully was awarded a belated 8-4 victory today.

He then followed that up with a first round stoppage of German Steine as Ireland romped home to a 9-2 win over Germany this afternoon.

Ryan Green, Jason McKay, Colm Molloy, Mike McDonagh, Jack Connolly, Caoimhin Hynes, Mike Gallagher and Jason Hughes also won versus Germany.

“Gary won Wednesday’s bout from here to New York, said Irish coach Billy McClean. “We’re delighted with today’s performances against Germany and the entire squad performed well.”

Ireland, who drew 6-6 with the USA Junior Olympic squad on Tuesday, have a rest day on Friday and will be back in action against Russia in their final match on Saturday.

The host nation, who claimed the lions share of the gold medals at the recent European Junior Championships in Bulgaria, are using two squads at the velese Cup
