Frampton wants to become the first man to stop Kiko Martinez
By Jonny Stapleton
KIKO Martinez is remembered in Ireland as Bernard Dunne’s destroyer. The ‘Mini Tyson’ with hammers for hands. However ‘Brick Fist’ Carl Frampton says if there is a knock out come September 22 he will be the one administrating it.
The Spanaird turned a boisterous Point Theatre into a morgue in just 86 seconds back in 2007. It was fast, fascinating European title fight with Dunne and Martienz hinted at a repeat performance when he returns to Ireland in September.
Belfast’s Frampton is the next Irish man in front of the three time European champion, but not only is he confident of winning he believes he could be the first to have the Spaniard flirting with the canvas.
Frampton is keen to make a statement and knows winning the blue strap that once sat proudly around the wastes of Bernard Dunne and Willie ‘Big Bang’ Casey in dramtic fashion will put him in world title contention.
“There is a chance I could be the first to knock this guy out,” a confident Frampton said yesterday. “I know he has a good chin, but I can punch hard. I can stand and fight with him if it comes to it or I can punch the head off him if it comes to that. Either way I am going to win this fight, no doubt,” he added before affording himself a glance forward.
“This is the big time now. We are a couple of steps away from a world title. Kiko is the measuring stick and we are not taking him lightly, I don’t want to describe him as a stepping stone to bigger and better things because he is more that that. He is three times European Champion, but if I want to be World champion I have to beat guys like this and I need to do it on September 22. ‘’
