Boxing Leads Irish Olympic Gold Rush
BOXERS featured heavily as Ireland’s “best prepared Olympic team ever” was unveiled at the National Concert Hall in Dublin yesterday.
A total of 65 athletes over 14 sports were confirmed by President of the Olympic Council of Ireland, Pat Hickey and Sonia O’Sullivan.
However out of that sizeable number only Ireland’s boxers are deemed gold medal hopefuls.
Boxing accounted for all of Ireland’s medal haul in the last instalment of the Greatest Show on Earth- and if we are to eclipse the silver won by Kenneth Egan and the bronze medals earned by paddy Barnes and Darren Sutherland it will most likely mean more than three of the boxing team had medals draped around there neck.
The six-strong boxing team includes world champion Katie Taylor, Paddy Barnes, Darren O’Neill, John Joe Nevin, Michael Conlan and Adam Nolan.
Hickey claimed of the entire Irish team, “This is the best prepared Irish team ever to leave Ireland in Search of medals.”
