Lindsay: Selby title fight perfect fit for Hearn’s Belfast show
By Jonny Stapleton
MARTIN Lindsay has urged Eddie Hearn to ensure he challenges British featherweight Champion Lee Selby on Matchroom’s planned Belfast card this September.
After a number of frustrating years the ‘Mac Man’ has finally made a return to British title level and is now mandatory for the Welsh fighter’s crown.
The British Board of Control ruled Selby’s next defence has to be against Belfast’s biggest ticket seller and Lindsay thinks a title clash with the featherweight surprise package would fit perfectly on to Hearn’s planned September fight night.
Marchroom boss Hearn has said he is coming back to Belfast with to put together a ‘Mega Card’ with Carl Frampton, Martin Lindsay, Jamie Conlan, Eamonn O’Kane and possibly Paul McCloskey.
The University graduate hopes Hearn wins the July 11 purse bids and subsequently the right to promote the British title fight so he can regain his old title in front of his home fans.
“I am really excited about fighting Selby I can’t wait. I am not sure where or when the fight will be as of yet. Matchroom are talking about a big show in Belfast in late September early October well this is a perfect fit for that show. It is a big fight that can be part of
people are saying will be a big card,” Lindsay told Mirror Sport.
“The purse bids have to be in by July 11 and the fight has to take place before the end of September, so hopefully Matchroom win the purse bid and we can have the fight on the Belfast card they are talking about.”
Lindsay, who despite two years of relative inactivity is a big Belfast draw, won and lost the British title in the capital of Irish boxing with victory over Paul Appleby before loosing it in the same city to John Simpson, but is confident he could repeat his title winning
display if given the chance in September.
“I am confident I can beat him. This is a competitive division everyone has proved they can beat everyone on any given night. I beat Appleby but lost to Simpson, but I am confident I can beat Selby.”
