Kavanagh sweet talks Mexican fight fans

By Jonny Stapleton

JAMIE Kavanagh used his sweet science and sweet talking skills to turn thousands of Mexican’s into ‘Nuisance’ fans in Cancun last weekend.
The Wild Card prospect celebrated his birthday by blowing out Jorge Ibarra in round 2 of their contest to extend his unbeaten run to 10 fights.

So impressive was the Irish fighters display that the knowledgable Mexican fight faithful took a shine to him, although they seemed equally as impressed that the Dub’ could speak Spanish.

Speaking to Irish-Boxing.com about his first fight south of the border Kavanagh said,

“It was good atmosphere. They gave me the mic after the fight and I spoke to the crowd. They went mad. After the fight everyone was coming over too me asking how I spoke Spanish. The Mexican crowd was very welcoming. Before the fight when I entered the ring they were not that great, but after the knockout they went crazy.”

To win in such a manner on the weekend of your birthday certainly calls for celebrations, but there was no extended party for the former Drimnagh amateur. Kavanagh is straight back in training and makes a return to the ring on July 14.

Ireland’s Golden Boy spent two days in Cancun but returned to the with his kit to the Wild Card to prepare for a bout on the under card of Amir Khan and Danny Garcia’s clash.

“I am already back in the gym. I am not doing much but just loosing up for next week you see. I will be in camp with Amir and I believe sparring. I have just come out of a camp so my conditioning will be fine. I am just delighted to have got my fight in Mexico in the middle of the last cancellation and this new July 14th date.”

The world youth silver medallist isn’t sure if he will be taking another step up in class when he fights in a couple of weeks time, but he faces his first scheduled eight round fight.

“I don’t mind what type of opponent I get. It’s my first eight round fight. I am just looking forward too breaking into eight rounders. There was talk of  some youth title? If it happens it happens. but i don’t mind. There not important belts just something too fight for. I am focusing on the eight rounds. If  anything comes after that it is a bonus really.”

      • Pat Breen says:

..your dead right there Jonny..had a boxer, Sean Kinsella, who beat him in the ringside as an 11 year old..He was with Drimnagh at that time..Gerry Malone was his coach…
