Joe Ward to learn his Olympic fate today

JOE Ward should know his Olympic fate today.

The Tripartite Commission panel  met last week and should inform the National Governing Bodies of their final decisions today.

So the IABA will learn if they can add medal prospect Ward to their six strong team.

The Junior and Youth world champion was denied his London 2012 place after he was controversially beaten by a local fighter Bahran Muzaffer in the Olympic Qualifier in Trabzon in April had hoped the Tripartite Commission could offer him a wildcard place.

The decision on whether the West Meath talent received a Wild Card should be announced later this evening or tomorrow, but sources in Lausanne, AIBA head quarters, are cautioning against optimism from boxers from countries where there have already been a number of qualifiers.

The committee are leaning toward weaker nation and traditional countries who struggle to qualify boxers to the Olympics are favoured wild card recipients.

There is no such precedent in the women’s game and Katie Taylor’s calls to have all the best female fighters at the Olympic Games might be met.
