Hearn: Kiko Martinez is next for Carl Framton

By Jonny Stapleton

KIKO Martinez is top of Eddie Hearn’s Carl Frampton wish list and the promoter hopes a Spanish  armada will dock in Belfast in September.

The Matchroom boss will bring Frampton home in the autumn and he is hoping to secure a European title bout with the fighter who had Bernard Dunne gone in 86 seconds.

Martinez, who has been billed as ‘Mini Tyson’, claims to be keen on the clash, but pulled out of it last September and manager issues have prevented him from committing to it this time round.

Hearn, however,  plans a September 8 Belfast show with Paul McCloskey, Frampton, Jamie Conlan and Martin Lindsay and is hopeful he can make the mouth watering clash between Frampton and the Spaniard with significant Irish previous.

Speaking after Frampton’s impressive win over Raul Hirales Hearn said.

“It was a great performance from Carl and a perfect opponent. We wanted to make our way up the world rankings.  We will be rated now by the IBF. He can step up the preparation for a big fight in September. We want to get Kiko Martinez. Carl is back in Belfast now, that was three fights on the road. We want to keep him active and get him out five or six times a year. That was learning fight for Carl Frampton and Kiko Martinez will be next.”

Frampton himself is eager to trade leather with the three time European champion, but he claims he has options now he is a world ranked fighter.

“I am in the top 10 in the IBF now so we can start planning a route toward the world title, but Kiko would be a great step toward that world title. “
