Taylor needs to make final in China to secure London spot
There is no doubt Katie Taylor will be aiming for her fourth consecutive world title in China net month but a light weight final berth will guarantee one of Ireland’s greatest ever fighters the Olympic spot she craves and deserves.
Four Olympic places are available for Europeans at the world’s best female boxers weight at the only London 2012 qualifier for women boxers. It has emerged, however, that in conjunction with the Continental Quota System, just three places can be won in competition. The fourth berth will be awarded by invitation.
If Taylor reaches the semi-finals and there are three other Europeans in the last-four, she may still not have qualified for London.
Taylor certainly has the talent not only to qualify for the greatest sporting stage on earth but is good enough to medal. However, after what happened to Joe Ward in Turkey sceptical Irish fight fans will be nervous as Taylor travels to China to win a world crown and progress to London.
