2 Fights in 2 Nights? – Confusion as Spike O’Sullivan announced for Sky Sports show

There was mass confusion among Irish boxing circles this afternoon following Matchroom’s latest big announcement.

The British promotional outfit officially confirmed their show in Sheffield on Saturday December 8th but the undercard for the bill raised questions.

Down to feature on the Sky Sports card is Spike O’Sullivan [28(20)-3(2)] however the Cork puncher was last week confirmed to be appearing on the Assassin Promotions Ray Moylette card in Mayo on Friday December 7th, one night before.

Two fight dates in different countries on one weekend is, obviously, impossible and both fans and media were left at a loss by the announcement.

However, for fans planning to go to the Royal Theater in Castlebar next month, it looks to be good news.

Irish-Boxing.com understands that the announcement of O’Sullivan for the show in Sheffield is an error on Matchroom’s part and that the Leeside light middleweight will definitely be featuring in Mayo, and only Mayo, the night before.

The Mahon 34-year-old, a Celtic Warriors gym-mate of Moylette, is making a rapid return from his WBA middleweight world title final eliminator loss to David Lemieux back in September.

A first round stoppage defeat, O’Sullivan took comparatively little damage and was immediately back in training ahead of a renewed title charge six pounds below at light middleweight.

One Irish fighter that will appear in Steel City on December 8th is Dubliner Jono Carroll [16(3)-0], a former gym-mate of O’Sullivan.

As was listed by the International Boxing Federation last week, the super featherweight will fight in a final eliminator with veteran Frenchman Guillaume Frenois [46(12)-1(0)] with the winner going straight into a fight with champion Tevin Famer [27(6)-4(2)-1].

The card in Sheffield is headlined by a WBA light middleweight title final eliminator between Brook and Aussie Michael Zerafa and also features Josh Kelly, Dave Allen, and more to be announced

One night before in Mayo, Moylette will box Mexican Christian Uruzquieta for the WBC International lightweight title and the card will feature, along with O’Sullivan, returning Cuban Luis Garcia, and Ballybrack super feather Niall O’Connor, with more to be announced.
